Should the minimum wage be the same for all workers aged 18 and over, or should younger adults have a lower rate?

The UK currently has different minimum wage rates depending on age. From April 2026, workers aged 18–20 are entitled to at least £10.85 per hour, compared with £12.71 for those aged 21 and over.

The government has committed to eventually removing this difference, but concerns have been raised that higher wage costs could affect employment opportunities for younger workers. Supporters of equal rates argue that adults should receive the same minimum wage regardless of age.
