The government is considering using the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse site in North Yorkshire to accommodate asylum seekers as part of efforts to reduce the use of hotels.
If approved, the site would house single adult men while their asylum claims are processed, with accommodation and essential services largely provided on site. The government says this would help minimise pressure on the surrounding community.
Local opposition has focused on the suitability of the rural location and the impact on future redevelopment. The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire has argued the former airbase should instead be used for new housing, jobs and investment.
