The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory, but Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over them, a dispute that led to war in 1982.
Tensions have recently increased after Argentine President Javier Milei renewed his country's claim and threatened sanctions against companies involved in oil development around the islands.
The UK government says its position is unchanged and that the islanders have the right to determine their own future. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% voted to remain a British Overseas Territory.
Argentina continues to call for negotiations, while the UK argues sovereignty should not be discussed unless the islanders themselves want it.
