There has been national discussion about delaying some local elections planned for May 2026, linked to proposed local government reorganisation.

In Basingstoke, council leadership have publicly supported going ahead with the elections as scheduled, arguing that democratic accountability should not be postponed. Others say delays may be necessary to manage structural change effectively.
