"Violence against women and girls is a national emergency in the UK."

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has declared violence against women and girls a "national emergency" and unveiled a long-delayed strategy aimed at halving such violence within a decade.

The plan includes specialist rape and sexual offence teams in every police force in England and Wales by 2029, expansion of domestic abuse protection orders, and investment in undercover online policing.

While more than half of forces already have dedicated units, the government wants to standardise and strengthen responses nationwide.

Critics say the plan is overdue and underfunded, but campaigners stress it must now be implemented without delay.
