"Cars are becoming too big for UK roads."

Cars sold in the UK are becoming wider and heavier, prompting concerns that they are outgrowing many of the country's roads and parking spaces.

Research by Transport & Environment shows the average width of new cars rose from around 177.8 cm in 2018 to 180.3 cm in 2023, meaning many now exceed the minimum standard for on-street parking.

Over half of new cars sold last year were too wide for typical spaces, particularly large SUVs and luxury models.

This trend is making parking more difficult, reducing space for pedestrians and cyclists, and creating challenges on older or narrower roads not designed for such large vehicles.

Critics warn it increases congestion and safety risks.
