Should social media sites restrict access to under 16s?

Australia is introducing a new law banning under-16s from using social media platforms, and Meta has announced it will comply by blocking access to Instagram, Facebook, and Threads for users in that age group.

Around 500,000 accounts belonging to 13- to 15-year-olds will be deactivated or blocked from signing up starting 4 December, with full enforcement by 10 December.

Meta says it will use various age verification methods and notify affected users, but acknowledges the process will be ongoing.

The move has reignited global debate about online safety for young users and how platforms manage age restrictions.

Do you think social media site should block under-16s in more countries?
