Should electric vehicles be taxed per mile driven?

With electric vehicles (EVs) making up over 22% of new UK car sales in 2025, the government is reportedly considering introducing a per-mile tax on EVs by 2028 to create a fairer system, as petrol and diesel drivers already pay fuel duty.

However, Ford UK's managing director Lisa Brankin has warned that such a move could discourage uptake at a time when EV demand has slowed and market confidence remains fragile.

She argues that a pay-per-mile scheme would complicate EV ownership and act as a disincentive, particularly as many buyers already face lower resale values and rely on incentives like purchase grants and company car tax breaks.
