Extinct animals should be reintroduced to the British Isles.

The South West Wildcat Project plans to reintroduce 50 European wildcats to mid-Devon by 2028, aiming to restore a species once widespread in Britain but driven to extinction in England and Wales by habitat loss and human persecution.

Conservationists argue suitable woodland habitats exist and that most people surveyed support the move.

However, farmers and landowners have raised concerns about threats to poultry, native birds, and potential disruption to local ecosystems.

There is also the risk of hybridisation with domestic cats, which some believe could undermine the entire effort.

Supporters say the project will be carefully managed to address these issues.
