Should elderly travel passes be means tested?

TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp has sparked debate by suggesting free travel passes for elderly Londoners should be restricted to those who truly need them.

She criticised author Michael Rosen for using a Freedom Pass despite his success, claiming it contributes to “bankrupting our country.”

Rosen defended his right to the pass, questioning whether means-testing public services is fair.

The Freedom Pass allows over-66s free travel across London and some national services.

While some argue universal benefits support dignity in old age, others say they should be targeted at those in financial need to reduce pressure on public funds.
