Should Police and Crime Commissioners be scrapped?

The government has announced plans to scrap Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) in England and Wales by 2028, calling the system a “failed experiment.”

With fewer than 20% of voters able to name their PCC, critics argue the role has not delivered on improving accountability or reducing crime.

Responsibilities will be transferred to elected mayors or council leaders, saving £100m over five years.

While some say this could improve local oversight and frontline policing, others warn it may create an accountability gap during a time of low public trust in policing.

Do you agree with the government's decision?
