Smaller councils would make Hertfordshire more accountable to local communities

Smaller councils would bring decision-making closer to local communities, giving residents a stronger voice in how services are delivered. Under one of the proposed options for reorganisation, Hertfordshire could move from eleven councils to four smaller Unitary Authorities, each serving around 300,000 people. Supporters say this would make councils more responsive and locally focused. Critics argue it could reduce efficiency and make it harder to manage complex services such as social care. What do you think - would smaller councils help strengthen local accountability and community identity?
